Books. A couple of weeks ago I posted an article about how to remove DRM from Kindle ebooks in four easy steps. This time around Ive got a tutorial on how to easily remove Adobe DRM from e. Pub and PDF ebooks. All you have to do is install Adobe Digital Editions on your computer, along with a free ebook management program called Calibre, and a handy plugin or two for Calibre that automatically removes DRM from ebooks upon import. Its so easy anyone can do it. One of the biggest problems with ebooks is DRM. It locks ebooks into certain platforms so that you can only read your purchased ebooks on specific apps and devices. As if thats not bad enough a lot of the time ebooks that you spend good money on are horribly formatted by the author or publisher, and if the ebook has DRM theres not much you can do about it. But if you go ahead and remove the DRM from your purchased ebooks you can read them on whichever devices or apps that you want. Plus you can easily control all aspects of layout using Calibre to modify the ebooks CSS file. Another great thing about Calibre is you can use it to manage your entire ebook library from all ebookstores in one centralized location instead of having your ebook library fragmented across different platforms. Disclaimer Removing DRM is a highly controversial subject, and is in fact considered illegal in some countries, including the US and Canada. This article is intended as only a guide for people that choose to take responsibility for removing the DRM from their purchased ebooks in order to have greater control over their own purchased content. I dont promote or condone piracy in any shape or form. These directions are based on using a Windows 7 PC. Details may differ slightly for Mac users and for other versions of Windows. How to Remove Adobe DRM From ePub and PDF eBooks. Last updated on October 13th, 2014 177 Comments. Inside the DRM removal tools folder that you downloaded theres a folder called De. DRMcalibreplugin with a De. DRMplugin. zip file inside. All the DRM removal plugins for Kindle, Adobe e. Pub and PDF, and B Ns e. Pubs are incorporated into the one install zip file this changed with a recent update previously you had to install each separately. To install a plugin simply launch Calibre and then select Preferences from the top menu if the window isnt open all the way you have to hit a small arrow on the top right to expand the selection to show the Preferences option. From the Preferences window you need to select Plugins and then choose Load plugin from file. Navigate to where you unzipped the DRM removal tools pack, open the De. DRMcalibreplugin folder, and then select the De. DRMplugin. zip file to install it. A security risk dialogue pops up where you have to click Yes to proceed. After installing the plugin close Calibre and then restart it. 4. Thats it. Now all you have to do to remove Adobe DRM from ebooks is import them into Calibre using the Add books feature. The plugin will automatically strip the DRM from ebooks upon import, and it takes virtually no time at all. Note that it wont work for ebooks added to Calibre before installing the plugin they will need to be deleted and re imported. In order to import ebooks into Calibre you have to have them downloaded onto your computer first, of course. Thats where Adobe Digital Editions ADE comes in. Wherever you bought your Adobe DRM ebook from Kobo, Sony, Google, etc there will be an option to download it to your computer if you login to your account and view your library. But when you download the ebook it will be an acsm file instead of e. Pub. First you have to open the acsm file for it to import the ebook into ADE. Once thats done you can locate the e. Pub file that you need to import into Calibre within the folder that ADE created on your computer. With my installation ADE ebooks are located in Documents My Digital Editions. Thats all there is to removing Adobe DRM from ebooks Now you can modify the formatting of the ebook and read it on whatever app or device you choose, including a Kindle but first youll have to use Calibre to convert it to MOBI format. Heres a Getting Started with Calibre Tutorial if you want to learn how to use Calibre to convert ebooks into other formats and how to customize layout and fonts. Adding Free Ebooks to the Kobo Reader or a look at Ebook piracyThe ebook scene is a different animal then the music scene. Name an album and I can almost guarantee that you well be able to find an illicit copy of it somewhere. Conversely name a book. Lets say a current book on the Globe and Mail best seller list. Now, I can almost guarantee you that youll be hard pressed to find an illicit copy of that book somewhere. The genie is out of the bottle on the MP3 scene but content providers arent letting the same thing happen with the EPUB scene. Why DRM mostly but Im also guessing other facts play a part market fragmentation, pirates dont read, lack of a clear winner in the ebook file format wars. I digress. Free ebooks are out there. First and foremost you dont need to resort to piracy to get ebooks. Plenty of legit, public domain books can be downloaded and added to your Kobo without the pang of guilt. Here is a short top list Project Gutenberg This site provides an extensive collection of digitized classics available in a variety of formats. Currently the site has about 3. Internet Archive The IA has a huge collection of digitized materials that come from a large number of different sources. Once again this is a collection of public domain works, so you might only be able to find older material. If you look though it shouldnt take long to find something interesting. Epubbooks This site is also a collection of mostly public domain books but it benefits from having nice cover images and pleasing smooth fonts. Adding Gutenberg Books to your Kobo. Youll find the procedure for adding these ebooks to your Kobo really straight forward 1. Download your e. Pub File. Mmm. Math based Sci Fi Romance. Not Every Book has an e. Pub Version. 2. Plug in your Kobo. Yup, itll work in Linux. Drag and Drop the File. It doesnt matter what folder but root is good enough. Eject Read a. Wow, those Gutenberg books have great cover art. Back to e. Book Piracy. I can see how content providers want to protect their investments. I can also see how an author wants to be compensated for their effort, but ebooks might not take off because of crippling DRM, lack of a standard open format, and no real price incentives. Leaving piracy as an only alternative. Take for instance DRM. I mean you bought it, not leased it, why cant you do what you want with it Even i. Tunes sells music without pesky DRM. Why cant you get an ebook without it How about ebook formatsAt last check there were 2. Wikipedia. That makes for a particularly difficult choice of ebook platforms and software for the average reader. Im casting my vote for e. Pub with my purchase of the Kobo but whos to say that Mobi. Pocket wont be the winner in the end. As long as the PDF doesnt win Ill be happyHow about price incentives Heres the paper version of the popular The Girl Who Played With Fire. The ebook version is actually 5. Granted there is a bit of a markdown on the list price for both versions but would you pay 5. I would. To me, this means that the cost of producing a paper book is negligible and a non factor. Which seems counter intuitive. I dont get a specific break on the price because Im getting an electronic version instead of paper. Im at a loss to explain how this happens. In amongst all this discussion of piracy and compensation Im reminded of Lawrence Lessig. Hes posted every book hes ever written free and online through his site. Hes mentioned that it has actually driven up sales of his works. Heres the most pragmatic calculation I could devise If you tie down an ebook with loads of DRM and sell it for 1. Say that book is pirated and distributed to 1. I guess what Im saying is that MP3 piracy kicked off a lot of things digital music sales, new distribution methods for music, and finally competitive prices for music. Ebooks needs a similar kick start, not to say piracy is the answer but maybe the removal of DRM is a good first step and an act of good faith. CNN has said that the age of Ebook piracy is now upon us, however there also is evidence to show that removing DRM increases book sales. Im not sure exactly how the future will go with ebooks and print books but it would be easier to call if DRM wasnt in the picture.
